The Origins of The Smurfs
The Smurfs is a centered on a group of small blue fictional creatures called "Smurfs". The smurfs were created and first introduced as a series of comic strips by the Belgian cartoonist Peyo (Pen name: Pierre Culliford). They first appeared in October 23, 1958 in the "Le Journal de Spirou" a story in the Franco-Belgian comics series titled "Johan & Peewit", a European middle ages comic series revolving around a young brave page to the king (Johan) and his boastful & cheating midget side kick (Peewit).
The Smurfs and the magic flute (English 1983) - (The Adventures of Johan & Peewit and the first appearence of the Smurfs)
The origins of the word "Smurfs" and the accompanying language came during a meal Peyo was having with his colleague and friend Andrà Franquin. Having momentarily forgotten the word "salt", Peyo asked him (in French) to pass the schtroumpf.
Franquin jokingly replied: "Here's the Schtroumpf - when you are done schtroumpfing, schtroumpf it back..." and the two spent the rest of that weekend speaking in the "schtroumpf or Smurf" language, characteristic by the frequent use of the word "smurf" and its derivatives in a variety of meanings. The Smurfs would replace enough nouns and verbs in everyday speech with "smurf" as to make their conversations barely understandable: "We're going smurfing on the River Smurf today." When used as a verb, the word "Smurf" typically means "to make," "to be," or "to do."
In French the smurf are known as "Les Schtroumpfs" and in Dutch its "De Smurfen", which was adopted in English as Smurfs.
In the beginning the Smurfs appeared several times just as secondary characters in "Johan & Peewit" but soon became there own series. Then the film "The Smurfs and the Magic Flute" appeared, with music by Michel Legrand. It was music that launched the Smurfs to the next level of success, with Dutch singer Vader Abraham releasing the first Smurf single which became a massive hit in Belgium and Holland, followed by the rest of the world. Soon Smurf figurines & toys appeared.
In 1981, Hanna & Barbera developed a cartoon series for the USA. Featuring no fewer than 256 episodes and are currently showing in roughly 30 countries worldwide. And the rest is history.

Meeting Smurfette
Smurfette has always been a favorite among fans as well as being the only female smurf in the village working as a beautician and nurturer, Her origins was first told in 1966. Original Smurfette was not a Smurf and was the creation of Gargamel, who intended to use her to cause jealousy and hatred among the usually happy all male Smurfs. Eventually Papa Smurf was able to turn Smurfette into a real Smurf by using a Smurfy Spell and since then she has been a key member of the village and also the lover interests of many of the other Smurfs.
